The T-Mobile G2 Touch is a vast improvement on the first Android phone from T-Mobile the G1. Done away with is the small keyboard which has been replaced with an on screen keyboard with clever predictive text. Also gone is the 3.2 megapixel camera replaced with a 5.0 megapixel camera. The other major improvement is the new release of Android version 1.5 also known as Cupcake, which is a more stable platform.

Screen
The phone is controlled by the 3.2 inch HVGA touch screen, selecting something on the screen gives you tangible feedback with haptic feedback. Turning the phone on its side changes the phone display to landscape. The interface is simple to use and is easy to learn how to use.

Camera
The G2 Touch is equipped with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with digital zoom, which is more than the Apple IPhone 3GS. The only disappointment is that the camera does not have a flash for shooting photos in poor light, but nor does the IPhone! I would imagine the exclusion of a flash is to preserve battery life. Some of the features of the camera include, Autofocus, digital zoom and video shooting at 18 fps.

Photos and videos can be viewed on the G2 in landscape or portrait mode. Here the photos can be emailed, MMS or uploaded to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, or Picasa. Videos can also be emailed from the G2 and uploaded directly to YouTube.

Web Browsing
This must be the best phone on the market for surfing the web and I include the IPhone 3GS in that comparison. Unlike the Apple IPhone the G2 Touch has flash support so you can view web pages with flash. As well as Flash the Touch can view normal full page HTML pages, navigation is done by the touch screen swiping, pinching, and double-tapping. When zooming into a web page the browser automatically resizes to fit the display a cool feature.

GPS
The phone comes with a built in GPS receiver which can be used to GeoTag photos with location information and navigation using Google maps.

Messaging
Email, SMS and picture messaging.

Multimedia
The G2 music player is pretty basic but it does the job well with album artwork. The video player supports MPEG-4, H.263, H.264, and Windows Media 9 video files. Headphone wise the G2 has a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack so you can use your favorite set of headphones with the phone. As well as standard headphones you can also use Bluetooth headphones as the T-Mobile G2 has Bluetooth A2DP support.

Applications
One of the strengths of the Android operating system is the ability to download applications directly to the phone. There is a wide selection of applications available for use with the G2 Touch, including some really impressive games. With more applications being made available on a daily basis.

Applications that come on the G2 Touch include, Google Maps, Footprint, calendar, calculator, world clock, alarms, stopwatch, timer, PDF viewer, voice recorder, weather app, stock app, Quickoffice and a game called Teeter.

Summary
The T-Mobile G2 Touch is a real challenge to the IPhones top spot as the best smart phone. With 5 megapixel auto focus camera, 3G super fast web browsing with flash support, GPS and a multitude of downloadable applications. This is really the phone to get if you do not want to be in the Apple camp.
