The LG KC910 also known as the Renoir (Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French artist), is LG's 8 mega pixel camera offering. Its claim to fame is the 'worlds first touch screen 8 mega pixel camera phone '. That said lets look at the camera in more depth as it seems to be the main selling feature of the phone.
Having an 8 mega pixel camera is only as good as the lens equipped. The good news is the Renoir comes supplied with Schneider Kreuznach optics. Schneider Kreuznach is a manufacturer of industrial and photographic optics, founded in 1913 and used by the likes of Kodak and Samsung. The lens is protected by a manual cover.
The Renoir has a Xenon flash which some people have said it is a little under powered. However as flashes go, Xenon have been found to provide far superior results than LED flashes. Which seem to be equipped on a large proportion of mobile phone cameras.
Focusing is automatic with a facility to focus manually which can be done from a slider on the touch screen. The ISO range can be manually changed with a range of 100 to 1600 allowing shooting in darker conditions.
There is a capture and zoom button on the side of the phone for ease of use. The KC910 has some interesting shooting modes, Art, Beauty, Continuous, Smile and Panorama.
- Art shot enables changing the photo to black and white along with other effects.
- Beauty shot automatically remove facial blemishes making sure the photo subject appears bright and clear. It removes the need for editing the photo in Photoshop.
- Continuous shot takes a series on 9 photos in succession
- Smile shot fires the shutter when the camera detects the subject smiling.
- Panorama shot enables the camera to take Panoramic pictures.
Zoom wise the LG Renoir has no optical zoom but the camera has a 16x digital zoom. Which as most people know an optical zoom is superior to a digital zoom. However there are a few benefits to a digital zoom including less storage space, more accurate focus and exposure.
As well as still photos the LG Renoir films high quality video in Divx format up to 120 frames per second, which can be played back in slow motion and edited on the phone.
That covers the camera now lets look at some of the other features of the Phone. The Renoir has a highly responsive 3 inch touch screen (240 x 400 pixel resolution). The touch screen interface is fully functional, intuitive to use with an on screen QWERTY keyboard.
Internet browsing on the Renoir is super fast with the ability to use Wi-Fi or 3G HDSPA with connection speeds of up to 7.6 Mbps. Web browsing can be done portrait or landscape. Like the IPhone the Renoir has an accelerometer, which automatically adjusts the screen to landscape when the phone is titled on its side.
The accelerometer is also used by two of the games supplied with the Renoir, Flying Dice and Wheel Mania. There are also three trail Java Games Asphalt 3, Bubble Bash and Diamond Twister.
The Phone is bundled with the Google package. Which includes Web Search, Blogging, Email, Map Finder and direct upload to YouTube.
Google maps makes use of the embedded GPS receiver in the Renoir. Another application that makes use of the embedded GPS receiver is A Jogger. An application for the fitness enthusiasts that measures distance and time keeping an exercise log for you.
The Renoir comes with an RDS radio and an audio player that plays all the formats you would expect including AAC, AAC Plus, AMR, eAAC Plus, MP3, MPEG-4, WAV, WMA. The music player has Dolby Mobile audio processing providing rich high quality playback. Dolby Mobile is a first for a UK mobile phone.
The phone comes with 100mb of storage on the phone not enough for an extensive music collection. However the phones storage is expanded to 8gb through a MicroSD card supplied with the phone.
Other features of the phone include Bluetooth 2.0 for using devices such as Bluetooth stereo head phones and there is also TV Out support for playing videos on your TV when purchasing the required cable.
As one might expect the battery life of LG Renoir is not its strongest selling feature. But when you have a 3G Wifi phone packed full of features its hardly surprising it is not going to win an award for battery life. The battery provides 3.5 talk time or 14 days standby.
To sum up the LG Renoir has an 8 mega pixel camera with a pedigree lens Super fast web browsing provided by 3G HDSPA and Wifi. Touch screen driven functionality, Mobile Dolby and GPS. A phone packed full of features, plenty of storage and capable of taking a mean photo.
